">The latest shipment of history is the Israeli occupation. In 1948, the western part of the city fell under Israeli control; in 1967, the eastern part fell under Israeli occupation. Since then, Israel has pursued a policy of Judaizing the city, aiming to achieve “Jewish demographic superiority.” Part of this policy is to drive Palestinian Muslims and Christians out of the city; denying their presence, history, and ties to the land. The documentary takes you on a journey exposing Israel’s policy to gain supremacy and hegemony over the city and its inhabitants. It also touches on the future of the city: Jerusalem is the key to peace; without Jerusalem, there is no peace for anyone.

The film includes interviews with Palestinian and Israeli leaders, human rights activists and political analysts. From the director of The Iron Wall

Announcing the 2nd Annual Boston Palestine Film Festival :: October 4-12, 2008

BOSTON PALESTINE FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES ITS SECOND ANNUAL FILM FESTIVAL COMMEMORATING THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE NAKBA

Film Festival Features Over 55 Films, Documentaries and Dramatic Features by International Filmmakers

The Boston Palestine Film Festival (BPFF) returns to the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA), Harvard Film Archive (HFA), Coolidge Corner Theatre with another compelling collection of documentaries, dramatic features and new films by emerging artists commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Nakba, the expulsion from Palestine of much of the indigenous Arab population. The Second Annual Boston Palestine Film Festival will run from October 4-12, 2008 with free screenings at Northeastern University, Harvard University, Boston College and Worcester. There will also be an opening reception on Friday, October 3rd at Harvard University, in conjunction with the Expressions of Nakba Exhibition, followed by the opening night film “Slingshot Hip Hop” at the MFA the next day.

As part of the festival, a concert by the Simon Shaheen Trio will be held at the Museum of Fine Arts on Friday, October 10th at 7:30 PM. Simon Shaheen is one of the most significant Arab musicians, performers, and composers of his generation. The event is a benefit concert to bring two students from the Edward Said National Music Conservatory in Palestine for a 5 week summer program at the Berklee College of Music, summer 2008.

Though born in Lebanon, Marcel Khalife is a cultural icon throughout the Arab World. Perhaps no other contemporary artist has so changed the face of Arab music. Classically trained on the Oud (lute) at the National Academy of Music in Beirut, Khalife refused to be limited by the rigidity of tradition, thus significantly expanding the possibilities of Arab Music. Yet for such an innovative composer, Khalife is amazingly popular. He must audition actors for the new National Palestinian Theatre. On the road with interviewer Bissan and her cameraman, “Lumière”, Ahmad goes in search of talent in the numerous refugee camps of Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. Ahmad guides the auditioning actors into dramatizing what best embodies their destiny: waiting. Mashrawi’s film is at times comic, at times tragic; in the camps the crew encounters idiosyncratic performers and characters but also a unifying theme of suspension, homelessness and yearning. Filmed in real camps with a full cast of Palestinian refugees, Rashid Masharawi's Waiting shows a human map of Palestine that is enduring and powerful.

Winner – Grand Prix (Licorne d’Or) – 25th Amiens International Film Festival, 2005
Best Film – Med-Film Festival, Italy, 2005

Speaker:
Nadia Yaqub (Ph.D., Near Eastern Studies, University of California at Berkeley) is assistant professor of Arabic language and culture at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
